Natural Reflections Index  Calluna Heather

Summer blooming Heather

In our Maine garden the majority of Callunas begin to open their flowers in August.
Below is Peter Sparkes, a gorgeous double pink flowering Heather variety. It blooms here in August

Heathers have small dainty flowers ranging from white to dark lavender and many shades of pink and red depending on the cultivar.

Silver Rose Calluna shown below begins to bloom in late summer.

But some Callunas are grown not for their lovely flowers but for the intensely colored foliage in winter. Shown here are Firefly in back and Wickwar Flame in the foreground. Here in Maine they are still showing their winter color in April when this picture was taken. Their foliage will change to green with colorful tips by late spring - early summer.

A winter Heath. This picture taken in early spring. These winter blooming Heaths are snuggled in behind or between other larger plants or rocks. This one shown is centered between several large conifers that block the wind. The bright blooms are so very cheery to see first thing in Spring when the snow goes.
