Clematis Vines - Summer Blooming Perennial Flowers

Clematis plants are a perennial vine best grown with some support like a trellis, plant stakes, on the side of a screen house or Gazebo. Most Clematis vines trail for 5-8 feet. Some, like the fall blooming Sweet Autumn Clematis, will grow 15 to 20 feet and are better on a fence, wall or other large structure.

Getting Clematis vines to climb upward in the garden gives you a vertical splash of color high in the landscape. Using a trellis, plant stakes or obelisk allows you to somewhat regulate that height.
Other possible 'ladders' for your Clematis might include: chain-link fence, chicken wire, wooden lattice, fish netting, brick, wood or stone walls and tree trunks.

Lovely to look at and a joy to grow in your garden but beware, all parts of the beautiful Clematis are poisonous ! Contact with the plant itself may cause irritation of the skin. Clematis will cause severe burning in the mouth if ingested.

Clematis can be used in the garden landscape just for beauty or with a practical purpose in mind such as:

  • Hiding a gas tank, meter or other ugly on your house
  • Softening a transition of short to tall plants
  • Putting an upright splash of color in a landscape.
  • Adding interest to a fence.

Plant your Clematis vine so it's head will be in the sun and the roots will be in the shade. The idea is to keep the roots cool while allowing the plant to grow into the sun.
This can be accomplished by locating the Clematis behind another plant. Ideally something short or if loose enough the same height or taller letting the Clematis grow through.
Applying several inches of mulch to the ground around your Clematis will also help it to keep it's roots cool
